George Juler

 

Regiment: 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers

An officer in the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers is commemorated in Netheravon Church having served in the Cavalry School. Born in London on June 16 1887 to Henry and Margret (nee Anderson) the youngest of three children. Commissioned from the RMA Sandhurst in 1908 into the 5th Lancers he joined his regiment in Dublin. At the outbreak of war he was at the Cavalry School in Netheravon but left shorty to join his regiment landing in France on the 17th of August 1914. The 5th were in constant action as part of the reargaurd retreating from Mons. On the 31st of August 1914 Lieutenant George Juler with two troops entered the village of Morsain but were confronted by a Squadron of German Lancers (known as Uhlans) who surrounded them in the ensuing fighting George was killed alongside Sgt Dale of his regiment. Neither body was recovered and George has no known grave, he is commemorated in Netheravon Church and on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre memorial.
